Dana's Mom Tells Her Story
Hi, I'm Dana's mom. Notice how we lose our identy when we have kids!
Dana is 15 years old. She was diagnosed at 26 months. Nobody, except those that have been there can understand what a life altering experience this can be. My baby has endured many things in her short life. I really felt like this burden was going to be too much for all of us. Then came the pump! Oh yes, I was reluctant, even after my niece started wearing one and loved it. My teenager, can finally be just that! The four or five shots a day are a thing of the past. She finally has been able to take charge of her disease. (The parents of children who were diagnosed very young can appreciate that! ) Because they were too little to manage it themselves, diabetes became "our" disease. Even though they grew older and more mature, it was very tough for them to "take there disease back". The pump sort of forces them to do just that. She has gained so much independence. I was always so afraid that she would never be able to make it on her own. How was she going to go to college, or live by herself? I had nightmares about it! That has all changed. For the first time, I believe that she will be able to take care of herself!
My son, Donny also has diabetes, he just turned 11. I plan to start him on the pump as soon as I feel that he is ready, which will be very soon.
I can't say enough about all of the support that comes from sources like this. It helps to know that there are so many people out there in the same boat.
Thanks to All!
